Surgeon Proof Roadshow

Since the beginning of May, Dieter Burkhardt and his new team have been on an international surgeon roadshow to inform about the C3 Ortho mission, today in Hamburg at ENDO-Klinik.

Dieter Burkhardt explains, “I am very pleased to see that the strong desire of many surgeons for a lower price for ceramic ball heads fits ideally with C3 Ortho’s generic product approach. We are working hard to make this approach a reality in the near future. If you have any further questions from the global surgical community, please do not hesitate to contact me at db@c3ortho.com.

C3 Ortho`s Update: Great Success on Our
Journey

Over the past two months, we have implemented our next steps, which were planned for early 2022:

Business Proof Concepts

Our “Proof Business Concept Regulatory Affairs” has now been evaluated as conclusive and implementable by several opinions.

The same applies to our “Proof Business Concept towards customers and surgeons”. Based on the overwhelming results from both surveys – the customer proof and the surgeon proof – we are more than confident that it is urgently time for a second supplier for ceramic ball heads for orthopedics.

Please note: details of the customer and surgeon surveys will be on our website in the coming days.

The targeted capacity in our business plan is now increasing to 1,000,000 ball heads per year because, among other things, we believe that metal ball heads will be eliminated in the long term by our generic approach.

In terms of investor selection, we are in the final round with our increased capacity planning based on the very positive market surveys: negotiations are still ongoing, but we will need some more time as one of the expanded deal structures, the second production site, is still under consideration.

Strategic material supplier

We are proud to have completed negotiations with our strategic material supplier last week.  The contracts are expected to be signed in the next few days.

Production site planning with C2 neutrality

We have also taken a big step forward in the selection of a production site, which will definitely be located in Germany. The purchase of a suitable plot of land (8000sqm) in Germany is in its final stages. The location is either in the Stuttgart area or in the “Medical Valley” in Erlangen (Bavaria).

2021 – many thanks to all stakeholders
2022 – we will make it big

First and foremost, we would like to thank everyone who has supported C3 Ortho over the past few months. Through many conversations, discussions and negotiations with potential investors, suppliers, surgeons and customers, our strategy and path for the next few years has been confirmed time and time again: The time is overdue – the market for ball heads requires a second supplier who can provide large capacities from day one.

So, before we start 2022, we want to let the whole market know that – based on the last very positive and encouraging negotiations with different investors – we will now increase the capacity planning to 1.1 million ball heads per year. All the investors we have spoken to have also given us the impression that our go-to-market concept is excellent and will lead to complete success.

We are very much looking forward to the new year, in which we will put our plan and strategy into practice together with our investors.

Cobalt is known carcinogen? – C3 Ortho will offer a market based solution

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), cobalt is “a probable human carcinogen.” This means that while studies have not shown a causal link between cobalt and cancer in humans, the element has been shown to cause cancer in animals, and laboratory studies have shown a possible mechanism for how this metal could cause cancer. In 2020, the European Commission placed pure cobalt metal in hazard category 1B, relying primarily on data from inhalation carcinogenicity studies of metallic cobalt in rodents.

However, in medical devices, there are differences between alloys containing cobalt and pure cobalt metal, which have different properties. Without going into further details, scientists and surgeons reporting on this issue are asking the big question: what does this mean for hip surgery? Although there is no real clarity on this phenomenon yet, one alternative solution would be the use of ceramic materials, here ceramic ball heads rather than metal ball heads. Unfortunately, ceramic ball heads cannot be used in many national public health systems due to their higher price compared to metal ball heads.

Especially in emerging countries, it is simply impossible for the majority of patients to have access to ceramic femoral ball heads. We estimate that approximately 900,000 patients worldwide do not have access to a ceramic femoral ball head and are thus exposed to the potential cancer risk of a metal femoral ball head.

A solution that could eliminate the need for metal heads is being developed by C3 Ortho.

We founded C3 Ortho with the mission that every patient around the world can have access to a ceramic ball head through our generic product approach. As it is always the case with generic products in the healthcare market, our ball heads will have the same product quality as the established products of the current market players, but at a significantly lower transfer price to our customers.

Additionally, C3 Ortho’s basic strategic direction is to produce only ceramic ball heads for hard-soft bearing couples.

Through this overall product strategy, we are confident that together with our strategic partner we will be able to efficiently distribute much more than 1,000,000 ceramic ball heads from 2030 onwards.

All orthopedic companies are welcome to contact us to learn more about C3 Ortho’s generic approach and overall product strategy.

Back from the DKOU in Berlin

The Ceramic Competence Center for Orthopedics (C3 Ortho ) is proud to look back on a very successful participation and very positive feedbacks. Many thanks to all friends and new potential business partners for the numerous interesting conversations. We were very encouraged in our activities and heading back home with a clear mission:

The market is urgently waiting for an alternative / second supplier for ceramic ball heads.

The readiness is extremely high. It was astonishing for us to see that some customers have already provided us with their forecasts for the coming years.

Additionally, we enjoyed promising discussions about financial participation in our C3 Ortho from both the orthopedic industry and surgeons. This could be an appreciated element to further optimize our current business model.

Our selection process is still ongoing. To that end, final US investors meetings are scheduled in conjunction with the AAHKS meeting in Dallas from 11/10 to 11/14.

For meeting appointments please contact us via info@c3ortho.com or directly via cell phone:

  • Heinrich Wecker :  +49 172 6193851;
